54 % of UAE restaurants are online only through social media

Most of them send guests to a Facebook page. What a guest, a search engine and an AI assistant can read there, and what they miss.

Short answerIn our October 2026 check, 5,982 of 11,029 independent restaurants in the UAE (54 %) named only a social media page as their web presence. 98 % of them pointed to a Facebook page and 5 % to Instagram. A social page works for photos and news; the menu, prices, opening hours and a one-tap order button need a website.

A guest in Sharjah searches for mandi nearby. Your restaurant shows up on the map. The website button opens Facebook. The page asks them to log in, the menu is a photo from two years ago and the last post is an Eid greeting. They go back and pick the next place.

What the numbers say

We checked 11,029 independent restaurant listings across the seven emirates in October 2026. 5,982 of them, 54 %, give a social media page as their only web address. For 98 % of those it is Facebook, for 5 % Instagram. Only 1,438 restaurants, 13 %, have a website that works on a phone.

The pattern is strongest outside Dubai. In Dubai, 47 % of independent restaurants are online only through social media. In the other emirates: Abu Dhabi 59 %, Sharjah 65 %, Ajman 68 %, Ras Al Khaimah 71 %, Fujairah 70 %, Umm Al Quwain 71 %.

Social media does some jobs well

Instagram shows the food and the room. Facebook carries reviews and the odd announcement. Guests use both, and a restaurant should keep posting. The trouble starts when a social page has to do the work of a website.

The jobs a social page does badly

  • The menu. It is usually a photo of the printed card. Guests zoom and scroll, prices are hard to read, and nothing on it can be searched.
  • Prices and hours. They change in the kitchen and stay old online. A guest who drives over to a closed kitchen rarely tries again.
  • Being found. Search engines and AI assistants answer questions like “where can I get karak and paratha in Al Qusais after midnight” from text they can read. A photo of a menu behind a login gives them nothing to quote.
  • The next step. A guest who is ready to order meets ads, other restaurants and the feed before your button.
  • Ownership. The page belongs to the platform. Reach, layout and rules change when the platform decides.

Keep the page, add a home

Nobody needs to delete Facebook. The fix is a small website that holds what a social page cannot: the full menu as text, prices you change in a minute, opening hours that say “Open now”, your address on a map and one button for WhatsApp. Your social pages link to it, and so does your Google Maps listing.

That website has to be easy to keep current, or it ends up like the menu photo. Whoever runs the restaurant should be able to mark a dish as sold out from a phone between two orders.

Before you spend a dirham

  • Search for your restaurant and the dish you are known for, the way a guest would. Note what comes up first.
  • Ask an AI assistant where to eat that dish in your area. See whether it knows your name, your hours and your prices.
  • Open your Google Maps listing and check that the web address leads somewhere useful.
  • Count how often guests ask for the menu or a price on WhatsApp in one week. Each question is a page they could not find.

Questions

Is a Facebook page enough for a restaurant in the UAE?

It helps with photos, reviews and announcements. A menu written as text, prices you can change, opening hours and a one-tap order button need a website, and search engines and AI assistants read those far better than a photo on a social page.

How many UAE restaurants rely only on social media?

54 % of independent restaurant listings in our October 2026 check (5,982 of 11,029) named only a social media page, mostly Facebook.

Do AI assistants like ChatGPT use restaurant websites?

AI assistants that search the web answer from pages they can read. A menu, prices and opening hours written as text on your own website are easier for them to find and quote than a photo of a menu on a social media page.
