Short answerChatGPT usually leaves a business out for reasons you can check. OpenAI's search crawler may be blocked by robots.txt or by your host. The business may be hard to find in the search providers ChatGPT works with. The facts may sit only on Instagram, in images or in PDFs. The website may not say plainly what you do and where. Your details may disagree from one site to the next, or little may be written about you elsewhere. And the person asking may simply be somewhere else. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search is not guaranteed.
The owner of a dental clinic in Jumeirah asks ChatGPT for a good family dentist nearby. It names three clinics. Hers is not one of them, although she has better reviews than two of the three. She asks again in different words and gets a different list, still without her clinic. Nothing about this is personal. ChatGPT can only recommend what it can find, read and trust, and one of those steps failed.
Here are the seven reasons we see most often, roughly in the order we check them. Our guide on how to get your business named by ChatGPT covers the work that follows.
1. OpenAI's search crawler cannot read your website
OpenAI says sites must allow its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to be eligible for ChatGPT search, and that the host or content delivery network must also let OpenAI's crawler addresses through. A line in robots.txt, a security plugin or a firewall setting can block it without anyone noticing. Blocking GPTBot, the crawler for training, is a separate setting and does not keep you out of search.
Check: open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for OAI-SearchBot or a rule that blocks all bots. Ask your host whether bot protection blocks OpenAI.
2. The search providers ChatGPT works with do not know you well
OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT search sometimes rewrites a question and sends it to partner search providers, and it points to Microsoft's privacy statement among them. Microsoft's own guidelines say they cover results in Bing and Copilot. A business that Bing barely knows starts at a disadvantage.
Check: search for your business on Bing. Add the site to Bing Webmaster Tools and claim your free Bing Places listing.
3. Your facts live on Instagram, in images or in PDFs
In our October 2026 check of UAE restaurants, 54 % named only a social media page as their web presence. A menu posted as a photo, a price list in a PDF or hours only in an Instagram story are hard for any search system to read and quote. A page of plain text with the menu, prices and hours is easy.
4. The website does not say plainly what you do and where
A home page that opens with “Excellence in every smile” tells a person a mood and tells a machine very little. A page that opens with “Family dental clinic in Jumeirah 1, open Saturday to Thursday, children from age three” answers the question that was asked.
5. Your details disagree
Your website says you close at 10pm, Google Maps says 9pm and a directory still shows your old phone number. When sources disagree, an assistant cannot state your details with confidence. Keep name, address, phone, hours and prices identical everywhere, and fix old listings you no longer use.
6. Little is written about you elsewhere
Google says prominence in its local results is about how well known a business is, based on information such as how many websites link to it and how many reviews it has. OpenAI does not publish how ChatGPT weighs such signals, but an assistant that reads the web can only repeat what has been written. Genuine reviews, local press, association memberships and listings in the directories your customers use all add to what can be found.
7. The person asking is somewhere else
OpenAI says ChatGPT can use an approximate location for local questions such as restaurants. A question asked in Abu Dhabi or Sharjah produces a different list from the same question asked in Jumeirah. Test from where your customers are, and with the words they use.
Check this week
- Open your robots.txt and make sure OAI-SearchBot is allowed.
- Search for your business on Bing and claim your Bing Places listing.
- Put your menu, prices and hours on a page as text, not only as images or PDFs.
- Rewrite the first sentence of your home page to say what you do and where.
- Make name, address, phone and hours identical on your website, Google and Bing.
- Ask ten customer questions in ChatGPT and note which businesses are named and why.
Finding and fixing these gaps, with a written before and after test, is what a GEO project does.
Questions
Why does ChatGPT not show my business?
The common reasons are a blocked OAI-SearchBot crawler, a business that the search providers ChatGPT works with barely know, facts that exist only on social media, in images or PDFs, a website that does not say plainly what you do and where, details that disagree between sites, little written about you elsewhere, and a person asking from another area.
Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search?
No. OpenAI controls each crawler separately. GPTBot is for training; OAI-SearchBot is the one that makes a site eligible for ChatGPT search.
Does ChatGPT use Bing?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes sends rewritten questions to partner search providers and links to Microsoft's privacy statement. Being well indexed in Bing, with a Bing Places listing, is a sensible step.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
OpenAI's help pages on ChatGPT search describe no way to buy a recommendation, and OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed. You can make your business easier to find, read and quote, and measure the result.
How long does it take before ChatGPT picks up changes?
OpenAI says changes to robots.txt take about 24 hours to take effect for its crawler. Changes to your pages and listings take as long as the next crawl, which no one can schedule for you.
